In a significant step towards enhancing child protection, staff members from Nyumba Ya Chimwemwe, Mtendere, and an affiliated health facility underwent a comprehensive safeguarding orientation from February 26-28, 2025. The training aimed to ensure that all personnel responsible for children’s well-being are well-equipped to recognize, prevent, and respond to safeguarding concerns.

The orientation, facilitated by AWRIM, focused on key areas such as safeguarding principles, legal frameworks, identifying child protection risks, and establishing safeguarding complaints escalation flows. Participants, including caregivers, healthcare providers, and security personnel, engaged in interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises to enhance their understanding.
“This training has given us the confidence to handle safeguarding issues more effectively,” shared one of the caregivers. “Now we know exactly how to report concerns and ensure the children’s safety.”

A crucial aspect of the training was working with management to implement safeguarding tools. With no existing safeguarding policy in place, the facility adopted AWRIM’s safeguarding policy for vulnerable children and adults. A safeguarding focal person was also identified to oversee the implementation and adherence to these new measures.
By the end of the training, 26 staff members had been equipped with essential safeguarding skills. The knowledge gained will not only improve child protection within the institutions but also set a foundation for strengthening policies and reporting mechanisms. The next steps include finalizing safeguarding tools, continuous refresher training, and reinforcing a culture of child protection within these institutions.
As Catholic Care for Children (CCC) continues to advocate for safer environments for children, this initiative stands as a testament to the commitment towards ensuring every child grows up in a secure and nurturing space.
